Two hotels can quote nearly identical rates and leave you paying very different amounts for very different stays. Comparing hotel deals well is mostly about comparing the right numbers. Here is how to line them up.
Compare on the all-in total
For U.S. stays, the FTC's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees (effective May 12, 2025) requires short-term lodging sellers to show the total price upfront, including mandatory fees — so the number on screen should already account for resort fees and similar charges. Use that total as your comparison figure, for the same room type on the same dates, and remember taxes are permitted to appear later in the process — check the final figure before paying. Headline rates are marketing; totals are math.
Check what is actually included
Breakfast, parking, Wi-Fi, shuttles and amenity access all carry value — but only the ones you will use. Price two stays where one includes parking at a busy city hotel and the other does not, and the "cheaper" rate can flip. Read the inclusions list the way you would read a spec sheet: item by item, against your own trip.
Weigh flexibility against the discount
Prepaid and non-refundable rates can carry lower prices; flexible rates cost more and can be cancelled. Neither is universally right — it depends entirely on how firm your plans are. Before choosing the discount, know the cancellation deadline, the refund form and what you give up if the trip changes. The saving is only real if the plans hold.
Compare the booking channel
Check the hotel's own site alongside the online travel agencies: rates for the same room can differ between channels, member or package rates may only appear on one side, and direct bookings sometimes carry different change terms. It takes two extra tabs and regularly changes the answer.
Value the location, not just the rate
A lower rate further from where you need to be is only cheaper if you ignore rides, parking, transit and time. Put a rough cost on the distance for each option — particularly for business trips near a convention district or vacations near a single attraction — and compare stays on the trip you will actually have.
Before you compare
- The all-in total for identical dates and room type
- The included extras you will genuinely use
- The cancellation terms behind any discount
- The hotel's direct rate alongside agency rates
- The real cost of each location
